Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

You’re driving along, minding your business, when suddenly, a rock bounces off the road and leaves a chip in your windshield. Annoying, right? But more importantly, what happens next? Should you pay out of pocket, or does your insurance have your back?

Windshield damage is widespread, especially in the Midwest, where temperature swings and highway driving can take a toll on your auto glass. The good news is that you may not have to foot the bill yourself. But first, you’ll need to understand the ins and outs of your coverage. We’ll explore and break down some commonly asked questions regarding insurance coverage and windshield replacement.

Does insurance cover windshield replacement?

Yes, but only if you carry the right coverage. Standard liability policies won’t cover it. You’ll need either comprehensive insurance or a glass-specific add-on. Some plans include windshield replacement automatically, while others treat it as optional. Check your plan now to know what’s covered before you need it.

What type of insurance covers windshield replacement?

Comprehensive insurance typically covers windshield replacement. It steps in when outside forces—like debris, weather, theft, or vandalism—damage your windshield. If your policy includes this coverage, your provider usually pays for some or all of the replacement cost.
Does comprehensive insurance cover windshield damage?

Yes. Comprehensive insurance covers damage from unexpected events like flying rocks, storms, or break-ins. If the damage is minor, many providers will even waive the deductible for repairs. But if the windshield needs complete replacement, you might need to pay your deductible, depending on your specific plan.

How do I know if my insurance covers windshield replacement?

Check your auto insurance policy documents, log into your provider’s app or portal, or call your insurance agent directly. Look for terms like “comprehensive coverage” or “glass repair and replacement”—these are your best indicators. Many providers make it easy to check coverage details online in just a few minutes. If anything seems unclear, don’t guess—speak to a live agent who can explain your coverage and confirm whether your policy includes windshield replacement.

Does insurance cover windshield repairs or just replacement?

Most insurance companies cover repairs and replacements, but typically favor repairs when possible. Why? They cost less and help preserve your original factory-installed glass. If your windshield only has a small chip or crack, your insurer will likely approve a repair first. It’s faster, cheaper, and helps prevent the damage from spreading, which makes it the smarter option for everyone. Will my insurance premium increase if I claim windshield replacement?

Will my insurance premium increase if I claim windshield replacement?

Usually, filing a single comprehensive claim, like a windshield replacement, won’t raise your premium. Comprehensive claims don’t affect your rates the same way at-fault accidents do. Still, some insurers keep track of all claims, even small ones. If you file multiple glass claims quickly, you could see an increase later. Before you file, ask your agent how your insurer handles glass claims and whether it might impact your rate.

Can I choose where to get my windshield replaced with insurance?

Yes, you can choose your repair shop in most cases. Insurance companies often recommend preferred vendors, but can’t force you to use them. You have the right to pick a qualified shop that you trust for your windshield repair or replacement.

That said, it’s smart to check with your provider before booking your appointment. Some insurers require pre-authorization or want confirmation that your shop meets their standards.

When in doubt, call your provider and get it in writing. This step protects your coverage and prevents unexpected costs.

Does insurance cover OEM windshields or just aftermarket?

Insurance coverage for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) windshields depends on your policy’s specifics. Many standard auto insurance plans only cover aftermarket glass, which meets safety standards but may not match the original exactly.

Suppose you drive a newer vehicle, a luxury model, or a car with advanced safety sensors (ADAS). In that case, you may need or prefer OEM glass for a proper fit and complete system functionality. In those cases, your provider might require a special endorsement or offer partial coverage and ask you to pay the difference.

Don’t wait! Fix that chip before it spreads!

A small chip might not look like a big deal, but it can spread fast, especially when the weather shifts or your tire hits a bump. Once the crack grows, your repair options disappear, and you may need a full replacement.

Insurance companies usually prefer to cover windshield crack repair because it costs less and keeps your factory-installed glass in place. Some even waive the deductible entirely for minor damage.

Don’t wait! Schedule your windshield crack repair in Omaha with a trusted shop before that chip worsens. Quick action saves money, protects visibility, and keeps your car safe.

Approximately $100 dollars for 15 minutes of work. They did a good job but for that price I would hope they include some value add services like maybe cleaning the inside and outside of your windshield.

Kryger was so helpful with my windshield replacement. They helped me make my claim and even let me know I would save over $100 not using insurance once they received the claim. They got me in the very next morning and my car was done before lunch. 10/10 will definitely be using them for all my glass needs

Called a few places to check prices and availability. Kryger was the only place able to answer with a real person, give a quote in minutes, and had amazing availability. The staff was courteous and friendly and the whole process was easy. Price was VERY doable as well. Great experience. Hoping I don’t break anymore windows- but if I do, this is where I’ll be going for replacements.

The Krygers glass company are run by a reputable family that has been in Kansas City for years and I hope will be around much longer. I wouldn't call any other glass company for our needs. This is my second time to call for windshield, And it turned out this time. No repair was necessary and they were completely honest with me . This time I also needed to replace some tempered glass for a table. I did end up reluctantly working with a " chat online" but discovered it really was somebody in the office. It worked well for both orders and did end up being very personal start to finish. The whole process was simple, yet professional and very good price. I highly recommend the Krygers.

I brought my vehicle in for a new windshield on the 13th or May. They had the windshield in stock and were able to finish it very quickly. They are a competitively priced company with great customer service. This is my second vehicleI brought to them to have the windshield replaced, their services are constantly of good quality and without any problems with the installation.
Thank you for service!

Finding out your windshield has a massive crack? Unfortunate, but we were fortunate to find Kryger Glass.

Kryger Glass made getting a quote quick and painless. Their pricing is reasonable. We opted to pay the added fee for the convenience of mobile service because we were within their serviceable area. They waste no time scheduling and completing a job—they’d have been out sooner had it not been for our schedule, and it was still less than a week. Joe, our technician, was prompt, polite, and professional. The job took less than an hour. The new windshield looks fantastic.

While I hope we don’t have to reach out for a windshield anytime soon, if needed, we’re reaching out to Kryger Glass.

Thank you, Kryger Glass, and thank you, Joe, for a job well done!

I got my windshield replaced here about a month ago. It was easy to get a quote and it reflected the actual prices. Mind you it was also the lowest price out of 6 places I called! The service took just under an hour to complete and I was shocked! Overall I was very please to be able to get my cracked windshield fixed so fast! Fast forward to now, there’s water coming into my car so I gave them a call to make sure it was nothing with the windshield. They got me in that day, fixed the issue which wasn’t even related to their work, only took 20 minutes, and they did it for free!!! Honestly overall 10/10 experience. I would recommend coming here for any of your glass needs!
