Windows are more than just openings that let in light and fresh air. For commercial buildings, windows are crucial in energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and overall aesthetics.

Choosing the right windows can significantly impact your operating costs, employee well-being, and the building’s visual appeal. This blog delves into the key considerations on how to choose windows for commercial buildings, empowering you to make informed decisions for your next project.

Understanding Your Needs

Before diving into specific window types, identify your building’s particular needs. Here are some key questions to think about before installing new commercial building windows:

  • Climate: Are you in a hot, cold, or moderate climate? Your location’s temperature will influence your focus on insulation or solar control.
  • Sun Exposure: Do specific areas of your building receive excessive sunlight or require natural daylighting?
  • Ventilation Needs: How important is natural ventilation for your office spaces or common areas?
  • Security Concerns: Does your building require additional security measures for ground-floor windows or specific areas? You can enhance security and safety measures by opting for impact-resistant exterior glass windows for businesses.
  • Aesthetics: What architectural style does your building possess? How do you want the windows to complement the overall design? Consider the layout and configuration of commercial glass storefronts to maximize visibility and attract foot traffic.

Choosing the Right Frame

The window frame material significantly impacts durability, maintenance requirements, and energy efficiency. Here are some popular options for windows for office buildings:

  • Aluminum: A lightweight and affordable choice, aluminum offers good weather resistance. However, it can conduct heat and cold less efficiently, impacting energy costs.
  • Vinyl: A cost-effective and low-maintenance option, vinyl offers good insulation properties. However, it can expand and contract slightly with temperature changes, potentially affecting performance over time.
  • Fiberglass: Known for its exceptional strength, durability, and energy efficiency, fiberglass is a premium choice. However, it comes with a higher price tag.
  • Wood: A timeless and aesthetically pleasing option, wood offers excellent insulation. However, it requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity.

Selecting the Perfect Glass

The type of glass you choose plays a vital role in a window’s performance.

  • Insulating Glass Units (IGUs): These double or triple-paned windows with an insulating gas filling provide superior energy efficiency by reducing heat transfer.
  • Low-E Coatings: A microscopic layer applied to the glass helps reflect solar heat in summer and retain indoor heat in winter, improving energy savings.
  • Tinted Glass: Tinted glass reduces glare and solar heat gain, making it ideal for areas with high sun exposure.

Balancing Function and Form: Choosing Window Styles

Once you’ve considered material and glass options, it’s time to think about window styles. Popular choices for commercial office windows include:

  • Casement Windows: These windows crank open on hinges, offering excellent ventilation and a clean aesthetic.
  • Awning Windows: Hinged at the top, awning windows open outward, allowing for ventilation even during rain.
  • Fixed Windows: These non-operable windows offer unobstructed views and natural light while maximizing energy efficiency.
  • Slider Windows: These windows slide horizontally on a track, offering space-saving ventilation.
  • Curtain Wall Systems: These large expanses of glass panels create a modern aesthetic and maximize natural light penetration.

Beyond the Basics: Additional Considerations

Here are some additional factors to keep in mind when choosing commercial building windows:

Energy Efficiency Ratings: Look for windows with high Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and low U-factor ratings for optimal energy performance.

Acoustic Performance: If noise control is a concern, consider windows with laminated glass or higher Sound Transmission Loss (STL) ratings.

Maintenance Requirements: To save on long-term costs, choosing window materials and designs that require minimal upkeep is best.

Local Building Codes: Ensure your chosen windows meet all relevant building codes and safety regulations.

Remember that deciding on the right windows for your commercial building requires careful consideration of your specific needs and priorities. By understanding the important factors, from material and glass options to style and functionality, you can make an informed decision that optimizes energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and aesthetics. Approximately $100 dollars for 15 minutes of work. They did a good job but for that price I would hope they include some value add services like maybe cleaning the inside and outside of your windshield.

Kryger was so helpful with my windshield replacement. They helped me make my claim and even let me know I would save over $100 not using insurance once they received the claim. They got me in the very next morning and my car was done before lunch. 10/10 will definitely be using them for all my glass needs

Called a few places to check prices and availability. Kryger was the only place able to answer with a real person, give a quote in minutes, and had amazing availability. The staff was courteous and friendly and the whole process was easy. Price was VERY doable as well. Great experience. Hoping I don’t break anymore windows- but if I do, this is where I’ll be going for replacements.

The Krygers glass company are run by a reputable family that has been in Kansas City for years and I hope will be around much longer. I wouldn't call any other glass company for our needs. This is my second time to call for windshield, And it turned out this time. No repair was necessary and they were completely honest with me . This time I also needed to replace some tempered glass for a table. I did end up reluctantly working with a " chat online" but discovered it really was somebody in the office. It worked well for both orders and did end up being very personal start to finish. The whole process was simple, yet professional and very good price. I highly recommend the Krygers.

I brought my vehicle in for a new windshield on the 13th or May. They had the windshield in stock and were able to finish it very quickly. They are a competitively priced company with great customer service. This is my second vehicleI brought to them to have the windshield replaced, their services are constantly of good quality and without any problems with the installation.
Thank you for service!

Finding out your windshield has a massive crack? Unfortunate, but we were fortunate to find Kryger Glass.

Kryger Glass made getting a quote quick and painless. Their pricing is reasonable. We opted to pay the added fee for the convenience of mobile service because we were within their serviceable area. They waste no time scheduling and completing a job—they’d have been out sooner had it not been for our schedule, and it was still less than a week. Joe, our technician, was prompt, polite, and professional. The job took less than an hour. The new windshield looks fantastic.

While I hope we don’t have to reach out for a windshield anytime soon, if needed, we’re reaching out to Kryger Glass.

Thank you, Kryger Glass, and thank you, Joe, for a job well done!

I got my windshield replaced here about a month ago. It was easy to get a quote and it reflected the actual prices. Mind you it was also the lowest price out of 6 places I called! The service took just under an hour to complete and I was shocked! Overall I was very please to be able to get my cracked windshield fixed so fast! Fast forward to now, there’s water coming into my car so I gave them a call to make sure it was nothing with the windshield. They got me in that day, fixed the issue which wasn’t even related to their work, only took 20 minutes, and they did it for free!!! Honestly overall 10/10 experience. I would recommend coming here for any of your glass needs!
