Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

Replacing a windshield is necessary when cracks or chips compromise visibility and safety. However, the period right after a replacement is crucial, and bad weather can be a major concern in preserving its integrity. Many drivers ask, “What if it rains after windshield replacement?” Will the moisture ruin the adhesive, or can you drive in the rain safely? Let’s explore some essential information to ensure your new windshield stays secure!

Why Is It Important to Avoid Rain After Windshield Replacement?

After a windshield replacement, the adhesive used to secure the glass needs time to cure properly so it stays on tight. Moisture from rain can interfere with this process, weakening the bond and potentially leading to leaks or an improperly sealed windshield. A poor seal can cause wind noise, water leaks, or, in extreme cases, ruin the windshield’s ability to stay in place during an accident.

In addition to structural concerns, premature exposure to moisture can introduce contaminants into the adhesive, further reducing its effectiveness. Dirt and debris from rainwater can get trapped within the seal, weakening its grip and causing uneven bonding. This can result in small gaps forming around the windshield’s edges, which may expand over time due to temperature changes and pressure from driving. Addressing these issues later can be costly and time-consuming, so taking the necessary precautions immediately after installation is crucial.

How Long Does It Take for a Windshield Replacement to Cure?

The curing time for a windshield replacement varies based on the adhesive type. Most urethane adhesives require at least one hour before you can drive the vehicle, though complete curing may take up to 24 hours. You can ask your technician for more precise timing. While some advanced adhesives offer quicker curing times, waiting as long as possible is advisable before exposing the new windshield to rain or heavy weather.

What Happens If the Windshield Seal Is Exposed to Water Too Soon?

If rainwater contacts the adhesive before it fully cures, it can dilute the bonding agent, preventing proper setting. This can lead to several issues, including:

  • Water leaks: Gaps in the seal may allow water to seep inside the car and damage your interior.
  • Structural weakness: An improperly bonded windshield may not provide adequate protection in case of an accident.
  • Wind noise and vibration: A loose seal can cause annoying whistling sounds while driving.

Rain drops on car glass

Do’s:

  • Schedule your windshield replacement on a dry day to minimize the risk of premature exposure to rain.
  • If you expect rainy weather, park your car in a garage or under a carport.
  • Even with fast-curing adhesive, wait at least 24 hours before exposing the windshield to moisture.
  • Check for any signs of water intrusion after curing by lightly spraying the windshield and looking for drips inside.
  • Follow the instructions given to you by your technician carefully to ensure proper bonding.

Don’ts:

  • Bring your car to a car wash. Wait at least 48 hours before washing your vehicle.
  • Slam your door, as air pressure changes inside the car can cause the windshield to shift slightly before the adhesive has fully cured.
  • Remove protective tape. Some installers use retention tape to keep the windshield in place during curing. Leave it on as directed.
  • Drive your car after installation in the rain. Even with a busy schedule, waiting the recommended time ensures your windshield is safe and secure.

Tips for Protecting a Newly Replaced Windshield in Bad Weather

  • Use a Windshield Cover – A temporary cover or tarp can help keep rain off the adhesive.
  • Drive Cautiously – If you must drive in light rain, avoid hitting potholes or driving at high speeds to reduce vibrations.
  • Turn Off Automatic Wipers – Some cars activate wipers automatically when they detect moisture. Turning them off can prevent unnecessary pressure on the windshield.
  • Keep Windows Slightly Open – This can help equalize pressure inside the car and prevent excessive force on the new windshield.

Approximately $100 dollars for 15 minutes of work. They did a good job but for that price I would hope they include some value add services like maybe cleaning the inside and outside of your windshield.

Kryger was so helpful with my windshield replacement. They helped me make my claim and even let me know I would save over $100 not using insurance once they received the claim. They got me in the very next morning and my car was done before lunch. 10/10 will definitely be using them for all my glass needs

Called a few places to check prices and availability. Kryger was the only place able to answer with a real person, give a quote in minutes, and had amazing availability. The staff was courteous and friendly and the whole process was easy. Price was VERY doable as well. Great experience. Hoping I don’t break anymore windows- but if I do, this is where I’ll be going for replacements.

The Krygers glass company are run by a reputable family that has been in Kansas City for years and I hope will be around much longer. I wouldn't call any other glass company for our needs. This is my second time to call for windshield, And it turned out this time. No repair was necessary and they were completely honest with me . This time I also needed to replace some tempered glass for a table. I did end up reluctantly working with a " chat online" but discovered it really was somebody in the office. It worked well for both orders and did end up being very personal start to finish. The whole process was simple, yet professional and very good price. I highly recommend the Krygers.

I brought my vehicle in for a new windshield on the 13th or May. They had the windshield in stock and were able to finish it very quickly. They are a competitively priced company with great customer service. This is my second vehicleI brought to them to have the windshield replaced, their services are constantly of good quality and without any problems with the installation.
Thank you for service!

Finding out your windshield has a massive crack? Unfortunate, but we were fortunate to find Kryger Glass.

Kryger Glass made getting a quote quick and painless. Their pricing is reasonable. We opted to pay the added fee for the convenience of mobile service because we were within their serviceable area. They waste no time scheduling and completing a job—they’d have been out sooner had it not been for our schedule, and it was still less than a week. Joe, our technician, was prompt, polite, and professional. The job took less than an hour. The new windshield looks fantastic.

While I hope we don’t have to reach out for a windshield anytime soon, if needed, we’re reaching out to Kryger Glass.

Thank you, Kryger Glass, and thank you, Joe, for a job well done!

I got my windshield replaced here about a month ago. It was easy to get a quote and it reflected the actual prices. Mind you it was also the lowest price out of 6 places I called! The service took just under an hour to complete and I was shocked! Overall I was very please to be able to get my cracked windshield fixed so fast! Fast forward to now, there’s water coming into my car so I gave them a call to make sure it was nothing with the windshield. They got me in that day, fixed the issue which wasn’t even related to their work, only took 20 minutes, and they did it for free!!! Honestly overall 10/10 experience. I would recommend coming here for any of your glass needs!
