Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

Kansas City drivers know that the roads here can be unpredictable, from sudden weather changes to loose gravel on highways. One of the most common frustrations on the road is dealing with rock chips and cracks in your windshield, especially when you’re on a road with a speed limit exceeding 43 mph. A single flying pebble can become an expensive repair or even a complete windshield replacement!

The good news is that there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of damage and keep your glass in top shape. Here’s everything you’ll need to take preventable action against rocks while driving!

Before diving into some vital tips on protecting windshields from rocks, we’ll answer some common questions!

Why is windshield protection important?

Beyond just avoiding costly repairs, windshield protection is essential for safety. A damaged windshield will obstruct your view of the road, weaken your car’s structural integrity during an accident, and can worsen with use, making things even more expensive as time goes on.

Are some vehicles more prone to windshield damage?

The design and shape of your vehicle can affect how likely your windshield is to get hit by rocks. Typically, lower-riding cars with a chassis closer to the ground will endure more damage, though these are less common than your standard pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans. These vehicles may have more vertical windshields, meaning they are at a greater risk of head-on collisions with debris. Newer models tend to be safer as most have very angled windshields, which deflect rocks better than the upright ones.

How to protect windshields from rocks

First and foremost, you need to be mindful of your following distance, especially near large trucks and construction vehicles that can kick up tons of debris and send small rocks flying toward your windshield.

To reduce the risk:

  • Stay at least three car lengths behind the vehicle in front of you.
  • Be extra mindful of trucks carrying gravel, sand, or construction materials.
  • Avoid driving directly behind snow plows, which can scatter salt and debris.

Following these simple pointers will allow you to give loose rocks a chance to settle before they reach your windshield.

Kansas City has its fair share of road construction; unfinished roads often mean loose gravel. To reduce your chances of encountering flying debris, stick to paved, well-maintained roads whenever possible.

If you must drive through construction zones:

  • Slow down to minimize the impact of any rocks that may hit your windshield.
  • Avoid sudden lane changes that could put you directly in the debris path.
  • Be extra cautious in areas with fresh asphalt or road repairs!

What are common ways to protect your windshield while driving?

Besides keeping a safe following distance and steering clear of rough roads, here are a few extra tips to help protect your windshield:

  • If you drive a truck or SUV, mud flaps help stop rocks from bouncing off your tires, protecting your windshield and the drivers behind you.
  • Driving at high speeds increases the impact force of rocks hitting your windshield. Slowing down, especially on gravel roads, can make a difference.
  • Even with precautions, small chips can still happen. The key is to get a windshield repair before they turn into larger cracks. A quick fix now can save you from needing a complete replacement later.

Kansas City roads can be tough on windshields, but you can minimize damage with proper precautions!

Are there specific brands of windshield covers that prevent rock damage?

While no windshield protector is bulletproof, a quality windshield film can help minimize rock chip damage—especially if you’re clocking many highway miles. Products like ClearPlex or ExoShield are known in the industry for adding an extra layer of defense. In contrast, others like ShatterX offer a liquid application that claims to increase glass hardness.

We recommend checking with your glass technician to see what’s best for your vehicle. Not every product works with every windshield; our team can point you in the right direction if you want added protection.

Approximately $100 dollars for 15 minutes of work. They did a good job but for that price I would hope they include some value add services like maybe cleaning the inside and outside of your windshield.

Kryger was so helpful with my windshield replacement. They helped me make my claim and even let me know I would save over $100 not using insurance once they received the claim. They got me in the very next morning and my car was done before lunch. 10/10 will definitely be using them for all my glass needs

Called a few places to check prices and availability. Kryger was the only place able to answer with a real person, give a quote in minutes, and had amazing availability. The staff was courteous and friendly and the whole process was easy. Price was VERY doable as well. Great experience. Hoping I don’t break anymore windows- but if I do, this is where I’ll be going for replacements.

The Krygers glass company are run by a reputable family that has been in Kansas City for years and I hope will be around much longer. I wouldn't call any other glass company for our needs. This is my second time to call for windshield, And it turned out this time. No repair was necessary and they were completely honest with me . This time I also needed to replace some tempered glass for a table. I did end up reluctantly working with a " chat online" but discovered it really was somebody in the office. It worked well for both orders and did end up being very personal start to finish. The whole process was simple, yet professional and very good price. I highly recommend the Krygers.

I brought my vehicle in for a new windshield on the 13th or May. They had the windshield in stock and were able to finish it very quickly. They are a competitively priced company with great customer service. This is my second vehicleI brought to them to have the windshield replaced, their services are constantly of good quality and without any problems with the installation.
Thank you for service!

Finding out your windshield has a massive crack? Unfortunate, but we were fortunate to find Kryger Glass.

Kryger Glass made getting a quote quick and painless. Their pricing is reasonable. We opted to pay the added fee for the convenience of mobile service because we were within their serviceable area. They waste no time scheduling and completing a job—they’d have been out sooner had it not been for our schedule, and it was still less than a week. Joe, our technician, was prompt, polite, and professional. The job took less than an hour. The new windshield looks fantastic.

While I hope we don’t have to reach out for a windshield anytime soon, if needed, we’re reaching out to Kryger Glass.

Thank you, Kryger Glass, and thank you, Joe, for a job well done!

I got my windshield replaced here about a month ago. It was easy to get a quote and it reflected the actual prices. Mind you it was also the lowest price out of 6 places I called! The service took just under an hour to complete and I was shocked! Overall I was very please to be able to get my cracked windshield fixed so fast! Fast forward to now, there’s water coming into my car so I gave them a call to make sure it was nothing with the windshield. They got me in that day, fixed the issue which wasn’t even related to their work, only took 20 minutes, and they did it for free!!! Honestly overall 10/10 experience. I would recommend coming here for any of your glass needs!
